Welcome to Ronda New Bridge Museum (Interpretation Centre) Ronda, Spain

The New Bridge is, together with the Ronda Plaza de Toros (Bullring of the Royal Cavalry Order of Ronda), the most recognised symbol of the city. There were two great ideas in order to built this bridge. The first of them was thought up in 1735, being king Philip V, consisting of a 35 metres diameter arch, and whose works finished only 8 months later. Unfortunately, this bridge did not work, because it collapsed, killing approximately 50 people.

A couple of years later the building of a new bridge was commenced, in 1751, and completed in 1793, at the same time as the celebration of the Royal May Fair of Ronda. The building took more than 40 years, the executive chief architect being José Martín de Aldehuela, born in the Teruel's provincial village of Manzanera. This master building stands 98 metres tall, built with stone masonry which was taken from the depth of the Tajo's gorge. It provided a much needed passage between the modern quarter of the city, also called the market quarter, and the old quarter of the city, which also helped to lead to the urban development of Ronda.

This impressive monument contains the modern concept of an Interpretation Centre featuring this great work of Engineering of the eighteen century and including the various aspects of Ronda's environment: fauna, vegetation, geology, urbanisation, history, etc. It also displays an interesting audiovisual work, which, in only 4 minutes, covers a wealth of information & images of the New Bridge and of the city of Ronda.
